Pattern notes:

  • Seam allowance is ¼in unless noted otherwise.
  • WOF = width of fabric: assume 18in x 21in for Fat Quarter (FQ), and 9in x 21in for Fat Eight (FE).

Fabric Requirements:

Cutting instructions:

Color A = Cut (4) 3in squares;

Color B = Cut (8) 3in squares and (4) 5 1/2in x 3in rectangles;

Color C = Cut (8) 3 1/2in squares;

Color D = Cut (8) 3 1/2in squares and (3) 6 1/2in squares***;

Color E: Cut (3) 6 1/2in squares***;

Binding: Cut (3) 2 1/2in x WOF strips;

***Cut each 6 1/2in squares once in half on the diagonal.

Block construction:

  1. There are (4) identical blocks that forms the runner. Each block will have half-triangles added to the sides in different ways.
  2. First, make the half-square-triangles for each (4) identical blocks.

With right sides together, lay (4) pairs of the 3 1/2in squares of Color C + Color D. Mark the back of each Color D diagonally using any pen or marking tool.

Fig 1

Sew using 1/4in on each side of the mark/crease previously made. Cut on the creased line and press seams to the darker fabric.

Trim blocks to 3in square. To trim, align the diagonal on a 3in square ruler or larger, to the diagonal on the block. Trim top and right, rotate the block, trim left and bottom. Repeat this process for all half-square-triangle blocks.

Assembling the blocks:

  1. Following the chart below, piece all (4) blocks. For each block you’ll need: (1) Color A 3in square; (2) Color B 3in square and (1) 5 1/2in x 3in rectangle; and (4) half-square-triangles from the previous step.  Fig 2

Assembling the runner:

  1. Sew each corner to the blocks individually to make each row following the charts below, and press seams open. Fig 3
  2. Sew the rows together (1+2+3+4). Fig 4
  3. Baste and quilt using your preferred method.
Congratulations!!!! What a beautiful project you’ve completed!!!
